Overview
About Ethiopian Electric Power
Ethiopian Electric Power oversees one of Africa's most ambitious energy programs. With the GERD now fully operational at 5,150 MW across all 13 turbines, Ethiopia has become a major power exporter in East Africa.
EEP's total generation capacity has reached 10,000 MW, with 93.8% coming from renewable sources, primarily hydropower across 15 plants generating 29,480 GWh. Five wind farms and geothermal projects round out the renewable portfolio.
The Koysha Hydroelectric project is under construction, and solar PV auctions for 225 MW are underway. When all projects are complete, Ethiopia's total capacity will reach 12,000 MW, enough to power the nation and export to neighbors.
Problem Statements
Challenges for Startups
Smart Metering
Millions of Ethiopian homes lack smart meters. Build IoT-based smart metering and demand management systems that reduce energy theft and enable prepaid electricity.
EV Infrastructure
Ethiopia recently banned ICE vehicle imports. Develop the charging infrastructure, payment systems, and grid management tools needed for the nation's EV transition.
Mini-Grid Integration
Off-grid communities need power. Build mini-grid management systems that integrate solar, wind, and battery storage for remote villages not connected to the main grid.
Innovation Areas
Where Startups Can Innovate
IoT smart metering and grid digitization
Electric vehicle charging infrastructure
Off-grid mini-grid and microgrid solutions
AI-based demand forecasting and load management
